Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin with Professor Tzu-Ming Pan
Known as the “Oscars of the Biotechnology Industry,” the 2010 Taipei Biotech Awards held its award ceremony and results presentation on September 17 at the Cathay Financial Building, Conference Hall A.
Professor Tzu-Ming Pan, Chair of the Department of Biochemical Science and Technology at National Taiwan University, developed NTU 568 Red Mold Rice and NTU 101 Lactobacillus, among other research achievements. These innovations were transferred from NTU’s Office of Research and Development to SunWay Biotech Co., Ltd. Through years of close industry–academia collaboration, both parties successfully launched:
-
NTU 568 Red Mold Rice – shown to improve Alzheimer’s disease symptoms, regulate blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood sugar.
-
NTU 101 Lactobacillus – proven to enhance gut microbiota balance, strengthen immune function, regulate adaptive immune responses, lower blood lipids, and protect against gastric mucosal damage.
These research achievements have now advanced from the laboratory to large-scale production, and have been successfully commercialized and launched in the market, benefiting consumers. They demonstrate practicality, innovation, and transformative value, meeting the needs of diverse groups. Backed by solid scientific evidence, the products clearly hold a competitive edge, effectively distinguishing themselves from existing products in the marketplace and standing out amid intense industry competition.
